LAS VEGAS – NAB SHOW (April 2008) – A new kind of journalism has hit the television airwaves and online news mediums as “citizen journalists” take to the streets to deliver unfiltered and up-to-the-minute news to the general public using the tools of modern technology. Ordinary citizens with mobile phones are everywhere, now they can document breaking news with video, audio and still images that may get posted to a blog, uploaded to a web site and aired on the local, national or international television news.
Broadcast and online media outlets can now empower viewers to capture live, late-breaking news with cell phones through Comet Technologies’ new citizen journalism software package, enabling viewers’ cell phones to transmit real-time, live streaming video to the studio. The software also allows viewers to submit still photos, which media outlets frequently use on their online sites.
“With technology, the average citizen has evolved from audience member to journalist, with the power of reporting now in their hands. Our package further allows viewers to capture news as it happens and make it immediately available to broadcasters,” says Marv Steigman, Comet Technologies, chief operating officer. “Broadcast and online stations can extend their news-gathering capability, gaining a competitive advantage by being first to air with important stories.
“This is especially valuable to stations in a competitive market where they are working with tighter budgets and are challenged to deliver the news with fewer reporters and camera crews available,” Steigman adds.
From a car accident to a local disaster, live, immediate coverage of the event can be readily available with a small tool that fits easily inside a pocket, providing flexibility in broadcasting news when a camera crew is not able to be on the scene.
Comet’s new citizen journalism software package allows stations to provide software that viewers download directly onto their cell phones, enabling them to transmit live, streaming video into the stations’ studio. From there, studio personnel are able to manage multiple video streams and immediately decide what news goes live to air or web, or is made available for later online access. With Comet software, viewers automatically upload still images to the station's website.
